At the ripe age of twenty-one, old childhood habits die off and the thoughts of being more adult seem more natural. When deciding how to spend a weekend, the usual bought of sleepovers and videogames quick fades away. Yet, for those out there that are still children (including myself) at what point do we stop being children? Some people go from friday night alcholo binges to a quiet trip to the corner cafe for a steamy mocha and a stab the Times crossword puzzle. When do we grow up into the adults we will be the rest of our lives?
Is motivation a factor in this? The idea of making one's self do something that they don't necessarily want to do even though it is most likely beneficial. Where motivation is rare, procrastination flourishes. If it were a disease, then there would be an epidemic. At this point in our lives, we should be making the "right choice" about major life decisions. "Fill out that internship application" or "apply for this job." All things that we should do or need to do, but the chasm between the idea and the completion is miles apart.
Meanwhile, while kids are growing up, marriage has become a growing a fad. Where the thought of girls having coodies was once the "in-thing" in elementary school has now been replaced by ring shopping and the meeting of the respective parents. At what age is it acceptable to think about marriage? A premature idea or thought can be the grounds for scaring off a special someone. But waiting years into a relationship can leave your partner feeling doubts about her/himself. Everyone's romantic clock is ticking, we just don't know when it will go off.
